It’s been a while since a cube diary entry. I’ve been getting incrementally better and it really depends on F2L. When I can “see” through the F2L quickly, I get a pretty good time.
Right now, I seem to be hanging just around a 35-second average. I flirted with a sub-35 average a few times in the Sunday Contest, including last week when I got an absolutely ludicrous 31.5 (talk about a “lucky” average, there were six “lucky” solves in the average). My last few Sunday contexts were the 31.5, two 35.X, and two 33.X.
My best average right now is 31.5, my best lucky time is 24.01, my best non-lucky is 27.39. I believe that a sub-30 average is possible. It would mean at 15 seconds cross/F2L, and I think that’s possible as well.
I’m also learning a new 2x method with much fewer moves. I don’t have the speed down, but I seem to be hanging around 15 seconds without working too hard. The main problem is that my Eastsheen 2x is soooo slippery, it’s hard if not impossible to keep it under control.
The US National Championships will be in San Francisco on Aug 4-6. I’m definitely going to go; we’ll just see what shape I can be in. I know my 4x and 5x are terrible, and I haven’t done magic since they broke a few months ago – restringing them is just a real pain.
I’ve also been playing with the Snake just for fun and seem to be averaging between 7-8 seconds, with a best of 6.15 seconds. I think I can definitely get faster here.

Did some 2x timings today and they felt pretty sucky, though I did have a PR single run and a PR average. However, that PR average is compared to my ancient PR average when I first registered on speedcubing Unofficial World Records (23.x) and is not much better than I did at NorCal back in September 2005 (which was 16.23). This, despite the fact I have a nice big Eastsheen cube and a much better method.
The two averages were 15.9 and 14.44 (second being the PR entered on speedcubing). The best time was 9.91, which was a very fluid fast solve with almost no waiting. The Eastsheen was lubed a while back and I’m wondering if it’s just too slick – it definitely seems very hard to control and manipulate. It would be interesting to try an average with the old, smaller, rubik’s 2x cube.

Did Sunday Contest today and just sucked. I was using the television being on with Harry Potter running (Ava at home sick today) as a way to test cubing with lots of distractions. My goodness, that was terrible. It felt like my mind was just dropping out all the time and I had to often stare at the cube to remember what I was doing. I also made multiple mistakes and felt very clumsy.
Average: 36.418
Times: 35.78, 34.07, 36.77, (26.44), 40.11, (49.60), 39.29, 29.02, 33.82, 30.63, 40.29, 44.40.
All the 40-plus times had one or more serious mistakes in them. Afterwards, I did some runs to try to get a non-lucky sub 35 and got the following times: 30.75 (lucky), 25.98 (lucky), 37.24, 30.29.
Today is the first day of competition in the class I’m teaching. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes.
